Roadtrip to the next PWA competition, video from Fuerteventura

Just started my roadtrip to the next PWA worldcup in Holland. Had the last day of work yesterday, and now I’m going two weeks to Holland before a three months trip back to paradise, Brazil!

After Fuerteventura I had two freestyle sessions in Norway. Sailed 4.4 and 5.2. Was good to be back to the cold water again, sailing with my Norwegian friends and my good friend Carolina. Carolina came all the way from Peru for a week visit, and we did a lot of different sports. She is a hard core “5-7 meters wave sailor”, but now she had to try some freestyle. Check out the photo of her vulcan… Like a pro!

50 knots, alot of sand and 5th place in the PWA worldcup!

Last week I finished my first freestyle worldcup here in Fuerteventura. It was a good experience to sail heats for the first time. I really expected to be last, but ended up on a 5th place out of 11 girls. So better than expected. I arrived on this windy island a few weeks before the competition to get some good training. First I waited a week before my windsurf luggage showed up, but thanks to Adam, Arrianne, James and Nic, who helped me out with borrowed gear, I didn’t miss one single day on the water.

The weeks before the competitions the wind was really strong. I sailed most of the days overpowered on my Severne freek 4.0. But when the competition started I was mostly on my 4.4 sail, which is a “big” sail for Fuerteventura. Sailing the heats was the most fun and you really try to do everything to win. My competitiveness I had playing handball a few years ago really came back, just even stronger!

The first competition day I won my first heat, and lost the next against Yoli de Brendt, who sailed really well and ended up on a 3rd place. Really cool to sail against all the girls who has many years experience from the worldcup.

In the last dobbel elimination who was the most important day for me, I won three heats in a row, and had alot of fun. In the 4th heat I lost against Olya Raskina. So at the end I ended up on a 5th place and happy about that. Also really cool that my good friend Arrianne Aukes became 2nd! Congrats! Looking forward for the next PWA event in Holland in September. Crossing fingers for strong wind! Check the photos!

Illegal windsurfing and a 30 sec shortclip from Bonaire

Looked through some clips from my last session on Bonaire. Click on the link to watch the shortclip! Good conditions!
Short clip from Bonaire. My last session!

Have been home for 3 weeks now, and we have had a alot of wind here in Norway. Cool to sail at my homespots again, although it took a while getting used to the cold water! A huge contrast to Bonaire, but it’s been great. Check out some photos.

Yesterday was one of the best sessions so far. Sailed together with my friend Andreas at a perfect freestylespot. Super powered up on 4.8 for 5 hours. We were so happy after such a great session… Today I found out that if you get caught sailing here, you can get a fee…around 1200 euros…because of some birds…! Glad we didn’t know that so we could enjoy the sweet session! Looked like the birds didn’t really mind our sailing…haha!

Bonaire 2 months!

I have been on Bonaire almost two months now, and have only a few days left before I’m heading back to Norway.

In the evening of the 26th of February, I arrived at Flamingo Airport, which must be one of the simplest airports you can find with only one gate! Youp Schmit, the local freestyle hero from Bonaire, was so helpful and picked me up at the airport. He really made my expectations high about the next days of wind as he just came from a windy 4.5 session at Sorobon.

Next day I went to the beach super early, as I still had a jetlag. After watching hundreds of windsurfingvideos from Bonaire, it was finally time to see Sorobon live. Crystal clear blue water and friendly people. First I met Caesar Finies, who likes to throw the sail up 100 meters, and then catch it. He said it was super windy, and I should rig my smallest sail. I went out with my severne freek 4.4 and my new Starboard flare 91 liter. It was absolutely perfect. Never have I been windsurfing at a spot where the wind is that stable. After some days on a 4.4, the wind became a bit lighter. So I used the 4.8 and the 5.2 alot. The first time I tried the freek 5.2 I had to doublecheck if it really was a 5.2. In the hands it feels like a 4.8. Super light and stable. Happy about that, because I used to not be that happy sailing sails bigger than 4.8.

Sorobon is a cool place because of all the different spots on the same beach. In front of the surf center Jibe City, you have nice, shallow crystal clear water with a bit of chop. If you sail away from the surfcenter, you end up at the mangroves. Perfect flat on starboardtack, and a bit stronger wind! Only problem here is the jellyfish. When you crash in the mangrove your body is itching for a bit, but it’s worth the pain when you get that good conditions. If you want flatwater on porttack, you can sail downwind close to the harbour.

It’s really impressive to watch and sail with the locals here, and especially seeing 11-14 years old kids doing difficult moves like skopu’s and culo’s. They have the best place to train with the stable wind, and a spot like Sorobon they can go to almost everyday after school.

The first 7 weeks I was windsurfing almost everyday, so I have been superlucky with the wind here. I have two days left on this island, and it doesn’t seem to be that windy before I’m going back. Now I’m trying to imagine how it will be to surf in a wetsuit in 6 degrees back home…

Thanks to Jibe City, and all the boys and girls for a great trip! Hope to see everybody next year! Also a big thanks to Rå Sport, O’neill and Maui Ultra Fins for their great support!
